The longawaited MRC bill finally made it again through the doors of the Citizens Majlis on 26th January 2009. A first reading was given back in November 2008 with no outcome. Neverthless the bill made its way to the Majlis floor through relentless lobbying to parliamentarians and media appearences by the MRC recognition sub-committee (Interim Planning Group).
The urgency of forming a Maldivian Red Crescent society was positively accepted by the new Maldivian President in a meeting with IPG and the Program co-ordinator of IFRC Maldives delegation (15th January 2008). The following monday, President Mohamed Nasheed in a meeting with the IFRC Head of Delegation reassured the importance of having a national society.
With the blessings of the President and follow up lobbying of IPG members the bill for the Red Crescent Act will be debated in this weeks Majlis session.
The Maldivian Red Crescent WILL be born….. possibly tomorrow.
